Hawk Dancing

Dancing Hawk is a young warrior from the Florida Wolf Clan. He is 1/2 Cherokee by birth.

At the May 2008 gathering, Chief Man Many Trees introduced him as the Head Dancer. He is so proud of that, that he has been telling nearly everyone. This has actually led to telling people about the Overhill Nation who would probably not have heard otherwise.

As part of helping him learn about his Cherokee heritage, in 2004, our family visited the Qualla Reservation, where we saw the outdoor drama "Unto These Hills". During the show, he saw the Cherokee Eagle Dance performed.

How it all began:

On his first trip to Cherokee NC, Jonathan was fascinated by the dancers. Here he is posing with several of them.

Back in camp that night, he surprised us by doing an amazingly good rendition of the Eagle Dance!

Back home in Florida, we saw an ad for the Talako Indian Family Dance Club. He joined that group, and has been dancing ever since.

Besides the Talako Indian Dancers and the Wolf Clan, he enjoys attending local Pow Wows. He also enjoys bicyle riding, and he occasionally goes camping with dad (Grey Eagle). He's been backpacking as well as canoe and boat camping. This Spring, he took part in the Wolf Clan's warrior campout, where he learned how to start fires without matches or lighters, safe knife handling and sharpening, etc.

He had just turned 8 when he joined the Talakos. It's been 4 years now, and he is considered one of the group's senior dancers, with over 200 shows under his belt. He has done Traditional, Hoop, and Fancy Dance, as well as a number of specialty dances, including the Eagle Dance

Chief Man Many Trees decided he should be renamed Hawk Dancing in 2008, so he has been formally renamed Hawk Dancing

In 2009, Congressman Alan Grayson was impressed with what Hawk Dancing and the other Talakos were doing, and he awarded them the certificate pictured below:

Hawk Dancing has a video on youtube. (He's the second dancer in the video.)
